“Thailand in Crisis” parts 2 and 3

Elephant Parade London and Thailand at Trafagar

4 of the 250 elephants scattered around London

I thought I was getting away from Thailand for a couple weeks, but Thailand was everywhere I went – it seemed that every other restaurant in Amsterdam was Thai and in London I ran into Thai elephants – many painted by Thai artists- all over the city. Then on the last day in London there was the Thailand at Trafalgar Square annual food festival event. The only thing different was the prices – which is why I stuck to the european food (and beer ) while I was away – and perhaps that is why I brought back to Thailand some extra weight. It was good to be away for awhile, but it is great to be back.

And the Palm d’Or goes to…

A man from Khon Kaen. Awesome news  – his films are kind of hard to find in Thailand mainly because they are very arty and one recent one was partially censored.  Was this award politically modivated by events in Thailand? I don’t think so – he has been a favorite of the jury in past years and many who saw his film think it is a masterpiece.

The Saddest Last Words

“Please listen to me!” he pleaded to the crowd. “Brothers and sisters, I will use the word ‘beg.’ I beg you. We have to end this for now.” His call was not heeded, and protesters began setting nearby buildings ablaze.

Memories of Central World Plaza

From The Boston Globe's "Big Picture" on Bangkok

It feels a little like September 11th today – like the world is now a different place. It was just a big shopping mall – so big I would always get lost in it. But it had one of my favorite movie theaters there – devoted to world cinema. Yui and I watched a series of international short films at the theater a couple years ago. I saw a Star Wars film there when I had just returned from a volunteer trip to the tsunami area. When my family came over to Thailand for our wedding I directed them to the Central World Plaza where they went bowling and did karaoke on one of the upper floors. It’s a crazy, sad, tragic day today – and loosing Central World Plaza is just a small part of it – but it’s the part that hits me the most.

Not Over

AlJazeera English doing great reporting from Bangkok. We are safe and sound in Khon Kaen watching (mostly avoiding) the news on television. Peace out.

“It Must Be Over…” – UPDATED

“It should be over tomorrow,” said Jaran Ditapichai, a protest leader who was a lead negotiator in back-channel talks with the government over the past week. “It must be over tomorrow.”

From “Thai Protestors Accent Deal That Sets a November Vote” in Today’s New York Times

Great news. Looks like Thailand’s political crisis (this round) is coming to an end. Strange that I live in Thailand but have not been to downtown Bangkok since last October. Right now the place where I asked Yui to marry me has been shut down for two months as it is in an Red Shirt occupied zone.

UPDATE: New Demands

The red-shirts will disperse only after Mr Suthep reports to the Crime Suppression Division.

From Todays’s Bangkok Post.

Seems like a small demand – but I get the feeling it ain’t going to happen – and sadly the crisis ain’t over.
