How to pack a tire

Yui and I are trying this on Landy this week – we want to make a simple tower of packed tires to become a water tower for the bathroom. It is hard work – takes about 15 minutes (if you are really good) to pack a tire with dirt. This is our first try at Earthship construction – maybe our last if this back-breaking work kills us.

Made a book today

I used the new feature on Wikapedia’s site to compile a book on all it’s articles about natural building. Comes in at a whopping 508 pages that can be ordered and sent to your home ( for $24 US ) from Pediapress.com or made into a free PDF download.  And you can do the same for whatever wacko thing you are interested in by going to Wikapedia.com

My book:

Natural Building – Ecological Architecture and Principles James Quilty “Editor”

Maybe I’ll read it someday.

Never thought I'd see these three under one roof...

“Paul Revere, Chairman Mao, and Ronald Reagan all lived in earth houses at various points in their lives…”

Studio 360 on Nader Khalili's "Super Adobe" Houses

Listened to an interesting interview with Nader Khalili on the Studio 360 radio program about the “mud” houses he makes. Yui and I have yet to make a “Super Adobe” but I think it won’t be long before we try it ourselves.

Songkran 2010

These are pictures of our visit wednesday to the children’s cancer ward at Khon Kaen University Hospital – we a held a Songkran or Thai New Year‘s celebration in the ward. Then on thursday our friends joined us on Landy to paint our park bench they helped make last month and to make some mud bricks for a teaching kitchen.

Logo for ลานดี or Landy

In Thai ลานดี means "Lan-Dee" or good field - Landy was the "I-guess-we-got-to-call-it-something" name and finally since it sounds good in Thai and English we kept it.

Building a trellis and park bench on Landy

We held a mud furniture workshop on Landy (yes that is what we are officially calling it ) over the weekend and about 20 people pitched in to make a park bench that sits under a garden trellis overlooking our lotus pond. Thanks to everyone who came to help from all over Thailand.
