A re-edited blast from the past. Khun Por is my father-in-law and every year around his birthday he plans a bike ride - two years ago, 2550 (2007) , he rode with the Khon Kaen Mountain Bike Team to Wat Pra That Kharn Kaen outside of Khon Kaen, Thailand.
Khun Por's birthday bike ride route last year - originally he was going to ride to Bangkok and then to Khon Kaen, but protests from the Yellow Shirts in Bangkok interrupted his vacation.
Another re-post from last year to Celebrate Khun Por’s Birthday today. Last year he planed a solo bike ride from his base (he is in the Air Force) to Bangkok and then perhaps to Khon Kaen – but protests in Bangkok by the Yellow Shirts put a wench in his plans – he did make it almost to Bangkok and Yui and I recorded daily conversations with him which can be listened to below:
Spring is coming and Yui and I got to see it early in Feburary on Phu Luang, the Royal Mountain of orchids in Loei. Along for the trip were Yui’s Parents and her Aunt. We took the bikes along but we ended up not using them much – you can’t be traveling too fast to see the orchids. The best time to go to this mountain is right about now and Yui and her Mom are going back there this weekend with Khun Chong the photographer to see the flowers in full bloom.
UPDATE – here are Khun Chong’s pictures of the March visit:
It was very hot or “ron” in Khon Kaen Saturday, the last day of February, so my colleges and I with Tom & Shampoo and the Khon Kaen Mountain Bike Team went to a beach on a river and cooled off. Before the trip we brought lots of toys and gifts for orphans who live near P’Oil. Khun Chong was again there to take the pictures.
I was struck by how many participants (mostly children) ran barefoot.
These are some great photos by Khun Jong of thaimtb.com of last months Khon Kaen International Marathon. Yui and I were there along with the Khon Kaen Mountain Bike team who helped officiate the event. As I wrote earlier, the first of the three runs started at 5 am in the morning in order to beat the heat and pollution and we were there by four and the whole thing was over by 9. As you can see in the pictures it was truly an international event and we were well fed. I shot some nice video (as I am seen with video camera in one picture) and I will have that posted soon. Once again, great job Khun Jong!
Today the Khon Kaen Mountain Bike team and I rode to the disabled children’s school and brought gifts and donations to give to the kids who could not make it to last week’s Children’s Day event at my hospital. Thanks again to Khun Jong of ThaiMTB,com who took these pictures.
