David K Wyatt Thai Book Collection at Ohio University

wyattYui and I were just at Ohio University last August attending the wedding of two O.U. alum and little did we know that we were near one of the largest collections of Thai literature outside of Thailand. The website New Mandala  writes that the Historian David K. Wyatt sold 15,000 volumes of his collection to the O.U.’s Southeast Asia Collection just before he died in 2006. Wyatt is considered to be the best english-language historian of Thailand. His “Thailand – A Short History” was the first book I read on the subject and it is the one I keep going back to. The University Library has set up a website to search it’s database but so far has only catalogued over a 1,000 of the titles – it’s still very much a work in progress – but the librarian in charge of the project has ambitious plans once it’s all indexed to expand it to include an even wider-range of Thai-language materials. Way to go Ohio.
